Autumn Cushion Talk

Autumn Cushion Talk

One of the questions we are often asked is how to style cushions on a sofa in different and interesting ways. Balancing colours and introducing different textures and shapes is the key but it can be challenging to achieve an effect  that looks stylishly casual and not over thought and fussy. Start by working out what the main colour anchor of the room is; whether it be from a rug, painting or existing soft furnishings. Combining this with other tones in the room which will work with the main colour will create a cohesive effect. Select an arrangement of cushions to provide comfort, interest and texture.   Don't forget to think about how the room and sofa are used; you may prefer lots of big, sumptuous cushions for a cosy TV room whereas a minimal, pared-back look might be better for a smart drawing room or hall sofa.

We have put together six different looks to suit a range of rooms which all have a comfortable, autumnal feel. The first layout in taupes and aubergines would suit a softly toned sofa in a comfortable sitting or drawing room.

Our third look uses a variety of different finishes and textures within an easy to use palette of pale blue, lead and taupe. The asymmetry of the layout adds interest without looking messy and using our panelled cushion in two different ways adds an element of fun.

This layout features one of our favourite colour palettes of delicate seagrass and warm forest green. Mixing embroidery and velvet creates a wonderful, sumptuous look that is perfect for the colder months. The soft tones we have used are easy to add in to existing schemes and work well in traditional or contemporary spaces.

Our final layout uses a palette of delicate, soft colours that would work well in a bedroom or sitting room. The pink makes a great statement and works equally well on a light or dark coloured sofa.
