Focus on Lampbases

Our lamps are always bestsellers so this week we are taking a closer look at how our current styles were designed and how they are made. Every one of our lamps started life as an idea for a shape which develops into a rough sketch, a conversation with a maker and eventually a finalised design. We then go to sampling before finally giving the go ahead for the full production.

Lakadee

Our Lakadee lamp bases were one of our first in-house designed pieces. Birdie took inspiration for the Square, Conical and Vase shaped bases from classical shapes which she re-imagined in a contemporary way. Carved from wood by artisans in Jodhpur, the bases are hand painted and lightly distressed for a subtle, textural look. On a practical note the lamp holders on the Lakadee tilt so that they can be adjusted for uneven surfaces and different heights. The flex is wrapped in a nutty brown colour to echo old-fashioned silk cords - this also makes the cable much more appealing than modern white or clear options. All of our Lakadee shapes suit a shade with a 40cm  base diameter.

Piyush

The Piyush collection was the second lighting range designed by Birdie and created by glass blowers in Firozabad in Uttar Pradesh. This time the lamps were rendered in hand blown glass with a delicate bubble or ‘Pulegoso’ texture in white, soft green, aqua blue and lead. The three styles range from a delicate cylinder (Tall) to two more rounded shapes in small and large. The Tall lamp was designed for bedrooms or as a solution for smaller spaces and works well with plain linen or block printed shades with a 35cm base diameter. The Small round also works very well as a bedside lamp and looks great in a sitting room or snug. For this lamp we use plain or printed shades with a 30cm base diameter. The Large round is a great statement piece and looks very effective as a pair on a console table. This size takes a 40cm shade.

Pulegoso

Our Pulegoso lamps are an extension of our bestselling Piyush range. Birdie took the design further by creating two completely new shapes which are blown in heavier glass with a more densely bubbled texture. The Tall Vase is a fabulous statement lamp that is substantial enough to work on its own whilst the Asymmetric is a stylish, contemporary take on our bestselling Large round and looks great as a pair. The Blush Tall Vase works really well in a sitting room or hallway whilst the Indigo sits equally well on painted or polished furniture. We have used the Smoke and Blush Asymmetric lamps in pairs on console tables and side tables. Pair the Tall Vase with a 45 cm plain shade for a crisp, clean look or try the Asymmetric with one of our 40 cm printed shades for added interest.

Basket

The Basket lamp is the newest addition to our lighting collection. Based on traditional African gourd baskets but rendered in ceramic, the shape of these lamps is soft and organic. We worked closely with a family run factory in Alcabaca in Portugal to produce three sizes of lamp with a distinctive, matte finish and a wonderfully tactile feel. Each shape is created from an initial mould which is then finished with a subtle reactive glaze to give depth to the colour. The palette ranges from a perfect neutral to a cornflower blue, delicate pink and off-white. Our aim was to create a lamp for any and every occasion; whether a guest bedroom, casual sitting room, smart orangery or hallway. We love pairing these lamps with our raffia shades - the combination of woven textures looks so effective but our Medina printed lamp shades look just as stylish. Our smallest basket takes a 35cm shade, the medium suits a 40cm and the large pairs with a 45cm.
