We are often asked for advice on how to style bedrooms, and particularly those for guests. The key to a really successful guest room is to create a comfortable, inviting room that is not only homely but has a touch of luxury. The bedroom below is a perfect example of a design that is bright and contemporary without being overbearing. The staples of the room are simple and elegant with well chosen furniture, quality linens and practical lighting. The statement cushions and bold accent colours lift the space and can be swapped out depending on the season.  Although this room is full of vibrant colour, it has a calming effect as the colours and patterns are well balanced and united.

We love guest bedrooms that have a genuinely personal touch. There is absolutely nothing wrong with a stack or shelf crammed with well thumbed books of all genres. Current magazines are also a great luxury for any guest.
An arrangement of garden flowers is a must and can transform the feel of a room. We always recommend picking/buying what's in season and keeping things fairly loose and informal.  Either place a small vase on a dressing table or a more prominent arrangement on a commode or, as in this case, on a mantleshelf.

A good quality, comfortable bed in a guest room is essential! It is very pleasing when friends come down to breakfast and tell you what a wonderful night's sleep they've had! For the bedlinen, we always opt for good quality fine white cotton or linen sheets and an abundance of pillows. It is important to ensure that guests are too warm rather than chilly so a blanket or throw at the end of the bed is both practical and can help to tie the colour scheme together. A good bedside lamp is vital for reading and do bear in mind how the height of the bedside table and lamp base will affect where the light falls. Here we have used our large Piyush lamp base in 'lead' with a blue block printed lampshade. When lit the printed shade has a lovely textural look and the glass base emits a subtle glow.

In this room our painted wooden Lakadee lamp gives a subtle contrast to the rustic off whites in the headboard and links well with the striped cushions, creating a fresh and lively feel. The use of this pretty antique kantha as a throw at the end of the bed provides a depth and individuality that wouldn't be achieved with a modern throw.
