Notes on Rugs

Have you ever put a room scheme together and wondered why it looks disjointed or unfinished? Very often what’s missing is a well chosen rug. We spend a lot of time working on our rug collections and always aim to have a variety of floor coverings that range from casual and affordable to high-end, unique pieces. All of our rugs are either made by artisans in India or North Africa or are sourced by Birdie from specialist antique dealers from around the globe. Whether bespoke or sourced, every piece is carefully created or chosen for its practicality, quality and style. Our aim is that any of our rugs could be used in a minimalist urban flat, a smart country house or a cosy cottage. A rug can be a vital accent or anchor in a room and a good quality, versatile piece is a worthy investment.

Hallways and Corridors

These high traffic areas need a hard wearing floor covering that still looks good with the odd mark or blemish. We love our cotton rugs for these areas; they are made with a very tight weave that won’t pluck and the screen printed, textural design is perfect for hiding the odd muddy paw print! These rugs are also very popular for children’s bedrooms and playrooms.

For a long, narrow corridor our Lahar runner is the perfect solution or choose the medium size for a landing. Woven from thick wool with a chunky finish these are also great for hiding marks and work equally well on hard floors downstairs or carpets upstairs.

Bedrooms

We know that finding the perfect rug for a bedroom can be challenging and the design ideal of a rug that goes under the bed and almost fills the room often comes with a hefty price tag. This is where our Curated Edition Beni Ourain rugs really excel. Each of these rugs is vintage and thus completely unique. Their soft, high pile is lovely on bare feet and they are the ideal size to go next to or at the foot of a bed. The slightly softened colours and traditional North African patterns look stylish in all manner of interiors and alongside a wide range of colour palettes.

Sitting Rooms

Choosing rugs for sitting rooms (formal or otherwise) can be equally as challenging as those for bedrooms. If you use your sitting room a lot then a feature rug needs to be hard wearing, stylish and easy to slot into a scheme, ideally with a design that won't date.

These are the exact criteria that we used during the design process for our staple Medina rug. After a significant number of drafts and re-drafts we settled on our textured flat-weave with a subtle interlocking design. The idea of this rug was that it would be a size suitable for any room with a design that would work with both traditional and contemporary interiors. This versatility is particularly useful if you like to refresh your interiors on a regular basis.
