The Marble Print Story

The Marble Print Story

We are so excited to be able to officially launch the Marble print part of our Mishran collection. Due to the terrible circumstances effecting the world this part of our Spring/Summer collection was held in India for some time but has finally arrived in our warehouse! We are so grateful to our wonderful makers, suppliers and shippers in India who we work so closely with for going above and beyond to get these pieces to us. We are also very happy to report that our main makers are safe and well and are starting to gradually reopen their premises which is wonderful news.

This print is significant for us as it is our first departure from block printing into digital printing. We have been working on a design based on traditional marbling techniques for some time and knew that we would need to look at a different printing method that would allow us to create the flowing design we wanted.
-
As we worked through the early processes we decided that we wanted the final design to be a calmer, more pared-back version of a marbled look with a directional flow. In order to create the very specific feel that we needed we worked with a local designer who created bespoke acrylic flow paintings on ceramic tiles.

This method involves pouring carefully prepared acrylic paint over a surface and then manipulating it with simple tools to create the desired effect. The completely flat surface is achieved with a blow torch which expels any air bubbles trapped within the layers of paint. This process also relies heavily on the slow drying process during which the paint continues to move and settle for some time. Often the finished piece is very different once completely dry.

Once we were happy with our tile it was sent off to our makers in India who carefully transformed it into a continuous design for digital printing. The resulting print is available in Cerulean and Blossom as table linen, cushions and soon to be launched as fabric by the metre.
