Styling the Unexpected Red Theory
8th February 2024
Often appearing and disappearing at the drop of a hat, online trends seemingly bubble up out of nowhere and go viral with no expert backing. However, this particular trend is one we can’t stop thinking about!

Unexpected Red: The Theory

In a recent TikTok video, interior designer Taylor Migliazzo Simon shares the "Unexpected Red Theory." She suggests that after you have curated your look, adding one or two red elements, big or small, where you wouldn’t initially expect them can instantly enhance the overall style of your space.

Red is usually associated with danger, power and energy, so it’s easy to be daunted by the idea of using it in your colour scheme, especially as a seemingly spontaneous last minute addition. At Birdie Fortescue, our signature style is one of calm and cohesive interiors that feel welcoming and relaxing at the end of a busy day. However, we do agree that when used thoughtfully, red can bring a sense of playfulness that banishes the boring and sparks creativity while still feeling harmonious.

The Colour Wheel

Red is usually associated with danger, power and energy, so it’s easy to be daunted by the idea of using it in your colour scheme, especially as a seemingly spontaneous last minute addition. At Birdie Fortescue, our signature style is one of calm and cohesive interiors that feel welcoming and relaxing at the end of a busy day. However, we do agree that when used thoughtfully, red can bring a sense of playfulness that banishes the boring and sparks creativity while still feeling harmonious.

Choosing Your Red

Your red addition can be as simple as creating a vase filled with punchy red flowers or a bowl of red fruit for your coffee table. For something a little more rooted why not add in a new accessory, such as our textural Stripey String Lampshade, Twisted Candlesticks or a Cotton Mache Vase? To layer reds within your soft furnishings, try incorporating one of our red cushions into your existing sofa arrangement, such as the bright Embroidered Envelope Cushion or the deeper Woven Horizontal Stripe Rectangular Cushion.

Stand Out from the Crowd

If you fancy being bold, then look to structural or larger pieces you could try, such as a red sink in a blue and green bathroom, or a red kitchen cabinet in a rustic neutral kitchen. To make a statement add The Stripey Ottoman or The Stripey Stool from our collaboration with Sarah Corbett-Winder, these are the perfect pieces to elevate your sitting room or bedroom, and are available to pre order now!

Spread The Red

When arranging your pieces it's important to space them throughout your room, rather than having them all on the same shelf, sofa or corner. Try a Beehive Ceramic Lamp on your mantelpiece, an Azulejo Notebook on your coffee table, and a vibrant piece of art on an opposing wall. Hannah Watt’s stunning collages have an eclectic feel, or for more of a simplistic edge Millie Straker’s snakes are an equally interesting addition.

Unexpected Red

The key is to keep the red to a minimum, but make the pieces count. Your red accents should stand out, add contrast and create a playful focal point, breaking through the existing colour scheme. Unexpected red is an instant pop of fun we can’t help but enjoy!
