Story - Framed Kuba Cloth

The Story

Kuba textiles are unique to the Democratic Republic of Congo and are used for everything from clothing to basketry. The graphic, elaborate patterns are hand woven from palm leaf fibres, each strand being carefully hand dyed. Taking days to complete, the cloth is embellished using embroidery, applique and patchwork techniques. Often patterns are passed down through generations and this craft is still used extensively in the region.

Sourced in Africa by Birdie, these exquisite vintage examples have been beautifully framed on a mount of hessian to enhance their striking designs. The earthy colours derived from vegetable dyes evoke the African landscape and work well in a multitude of schemes. Each artwork is slightly different and when grouped together they create a bold statement
