Katy’s family’s stunning garden in Fife is at the heart of her practice and many of the specimens she casts are picked from the garden. Casting is a labour intensive process that requires huge amounts of patience to achieve a crisp, blemish free finish in the final plaster cast. This cast is part of a collection of postage stamp inspired works by the botanical casting artist Katy Eccles. Using a bespoke two part casting frame Katy has created this unique design which mimics the shape of a traditional stamp and the finished cast consists of a recessed botanical portrait surrounded by a scalloped plaster frame. The home grown Eryngium head and stem, on elf Katy’s favourite flowers to cast, has been carefully pressed into soft clay, then delicately removed, leaving behind a beautifully detailed botanical impression. Plaster was then poured over the clay to preserve the intricate imprint and the surrounding scalloped frame, transforming it into a permanent piece of art. The plaster behind the Sea Holly head has been carefully hand painted in a taupe colour and the scalloped frame a pastel sky blue. This piece comes ready to hang with a hanging device attached to the reverse. These botanical postage stamps can be displayed individually or paired with other casts from this collection, either as a trio or side by side.
