Back to Nature with 100 Acres: Q&A with co-founder Ellea Whamond
4th October 2024
This week we caught up with Ellea Whamond, co-founder of British botanical perfumery, 100 Acres, who craft beautifully scented, luxurious products for the home and body.

As summer fades and autumn settles in, we begin to spend more time at home. Now is the perfect opportunity to refresh your interior decor and invest in luxury home fragrances to transform your space into a welcoming, autumnal haven. If making your home smell lovely is on your agenda, then why not treat yourself to a decadent body wash or hand cream, too?

Who are 100 Acres?

100 Acres’ fragrances are inspired by enjoying one 'hundred acres' of idyllic English countryside in which we can roam and explore freely. Their scents are ideal for bringing the outdoors in and boosting ambience - a lit candle is always a treat on a rainy day.

Read on to find out more about 100 Acres’ ethos and what inspires their wonderful scents, as well as Ellea’s journey into the world of perfumery from her career in Law.

How would you describe your interior design style?

I’d describe it as being on the cusp between eclectic and peaceful. I love ‘stuff’ but I hate clutter, being a strong believer in William Morris’s often-repeated quote of never possessing anything you do not believe to be truly useful or beautiful. I love a base of warm, welcoming neutrals and classic character features, but there I love to fill my home with colourful, textured pieces from all over the world. Nearly all of my most treasured pieces are inexpensive items gathered from vintage markets and global travels. I’m especially inspired by Moorish architecture, the beautiful, artisan designs of central Asia and am a total sucker for anything Andalusian, too. A home with artisan pieces from all over the world is my idea of heaven. And most importantly, to me a space isn’t complete until there’s a ton of greenery, be it trailing plants or statuesque indoor trees!

What's your go-to colour palette right now, and what do you love about it?

Using a warm off-white or cream as a starting point, I love to then pull in pinks, oranges, greens, browns, creams - anything warm - and I love a subtle gold accent. Much like our 100 Acres brand colours!

Do you have a favourite Birdie Fortescue piece you’ve got your eye on?

Oh so many, it’s hard to choose! But the new Havana Stripe Bone Inlay Collection is sublime (I can never resist bone inlay) and I’ve been long lusting after the green & red Dumaloq Suzani Throw!

What's your guilty pleasure when it comes to choosing home decor?

I could search through Pinterest for days. I have boards and boards for future homes all over the world. I could also spend hours on First Dibs.

How would you describe your design style in 3 words? (fashion or interiors)

Eclectic, luscious and inviting.

A little bit about you - why did you choose to step away from your law career to delve into the world of 100 Acres?

It was a risk, but I had this vision for a beautiful, beautiful brand and botanical-filled world that would bring so much joy to people every day. What I strive for the most with 100 Acres is ensuring that our scents aren’t just scents - they’re bottled portals to bountiful English gardens or sun-filled Summer meadows, even if you’re at your work desk or taking a 5 minute shower before work on a Monday. It was a risk of course in taking the leap from a more well-trodden career path and building a brand, but the law isn’t going anywhere so I knew I could always go back if I wanted to.

We absolutely love your hand painted bottles, could you tell us a little bit more about the design?

We’re incredibly proud of our beautiful green block print which my co-founder Georgie hand-painted at the beginning of our journey (despite being an avid amateur painter, sadly I can’t take credit for this one!). It was hand-painted in watercolour - we worked for months with various design houses and branding agencies but nothing was coming back that felt right, so we decided to take matters into our own hands. We wanted something that was cool and recognisable yet organic and aligned with our love for artisan creation. It feels 100% right for us which is very satisfying.

Can you tell us about your “Scent Network” at 100 Acres, and what inspires the fragrances of your products?

Our fragrances are inspired by the idea of having our own ‘hundred acres’ of heavenly English countryside to run around naked in. We don’t have our own hundred acres (and we probably couldn’t run around naked in them even if we did!) but this is what every fragrance comes down to. When we create it, we think about what botanicals you’d find in an abundant English garden - rose, lavender, chamomile, geranium, the like - so we add, layer, tinker and tweak until we land on a fragrance that is truly transportive. That’s how we design our fragrances. They’re more than just nice smells - they take you somewhere.

As for our 100 Acres Scent Network, all of our products have a different fragrance - from our hand wash to our bubble bath to our diffuser, they’re all unique and all filled with over ten different herbs, flowers and fruits. The idea is that as you use different 100 Acres products throughout your day, all of these beautifully rich botanical oils layer and intermingle on your skin, leaving you smelling and feeling heavenly!

Where would you like to take 100 Acres as a brand, or do you have any exciting projects coming up?

Well…we currently have a beautiful and concise product range (we don’t believe in churning out constant newness just for the sake of it as many beauty brands do) and while I can’t tell you too much, we do have a handful of incredibly exciting products in the pipeline. Some of which tie in fabulously with interior scenting, so watch this space!

What is your favourite way to spend time off, a long weekend or a holiday destination?

This would undoubtedly be a weekend in the English countryside. I love to travel of course, but nothing beats the English countryside - be it a cosy, cold winter weekend holed up in a cottage with a log fire and a bubble bath, or a sun-soaked summer’s day spent lounging in the garden and then eating supper outside with friends on a long candle-lit table. The sights and scents of the English countryside - you just can’t beat it.
