5 Quintessential English Gardens to Visit Paired with Summer Sale Picks
9th July 2025

Few things capture the essence of summer like a garden visit. Whether or not you’re green-fingered, gardens offer a feast for the senses – vibrant colours, rich textures, fragrant blooms, and the soothing presence of nature. Here are five to explore this season, each paired with picks from our Summer Sale.

One of the best ways to while away a summer’s day is by visiting a garden. Whether you are green-fingered or not, gardens are an inspiring treat for the senses – all the wonderful colours, textures and patterns, fabulous fragrances, perhaps a chance to sample homegrown herbs and vegetables – and of course, the revitalising benefits of simply spending time in nature. Here are five gardens for you to discover this summer, paired with favourites from our Summer Sale!

Mannington Hall, Norfolk

A short drive from the Birdie Fortescue HQ, Mannington Hall Gardens surround the medieval moated manor house of the celebrated Walpole family. In the Heritage Rose Garden, you will find hundreds of varieties of roses in period settings. It’s quite a collection but there is plenty more to explore in The Four Element gardens and experience in the sensory garden. Walk around the orchard and wildflower meadow and be sure to visit the arboretum of native trees. We were particularly excited to hear that local artisan baker, Bread Source, is now running a café on site.

Paired with: The Nasturtium Tablecloth, Runner and Napkins:

Bring a burst of summer to your dining with our Nasturtium Table Linen – a vibrant set featuring a tablecloth, table runner, and coordinating napkins. Inspired by Butter Wakefield’s favourite summer flower, the nasturtium, this design showcases uplifting mandarin tones with fresh greens which are digitally printed on a premium cotton-linen blend. All pieces are smartly finished with a contrast tape for a tailored look, perfect for both indoor dining and alfresco entertaining. Style with our Palm Leaf Candlesticks, or mix and match linens with our Garden Stripe or Sunset Stripe Napkins for a fun, garden-inspired tablescape.

Chelsea Physic Garden, London

Truly a hidden gem, the Chelsea Physic Garden is a four-acre oasis of calm and tranquillity in central London. Established in 1673, by the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries of London, it is home to over 4,500 medicinal, edible and useful plants, each with its own dedicated plot. The gardens' high brick walls create a unique micro-climate which allows for a surprisingly international collection of flora from the Canary Islands and Madeira to East Asia and North America. Don’t miss the historic glasshouses or pond rockery which is thought to be the oldest in Europe. Take note that the garden is not open on Saturdays.

Paired with: The Palm Leaf Candlestick

Create a refined yet playful centrepiece with our Palm Leaf Candlestick – a handcrafted accessory that brings together Butter Wakefield’s bold tablescaping and Birdie’s timeless style. Made from papier-mâché on a sturdy metal base, it’s available in soft green or taupe and two sizes for easy layering. Style in clustered heights or line them along your table for instant impact. Pair with our colourfulRattan Placemats and The Nasturtium Runner for a striking, seasonal tablescape full of texture and charm.

Sissinghurst Castle Garden, Kent

When the poet and writer, Vita Sackville-West, and her husband, author and diplomat Harold Nicolson, found and fell in love with this house in 1930 its garden was in a terrible mess. Over the next thirty years, they and their head gardeners transformed it into one of the world's most influential gardens. What we love most about Sissinghurst is the arrangement of enclosed garden rooms, like the wonderful White Garden with its carefully considered palette of white, silver, grey and green, and the abundance of informal, massed planting. Plants are crammed into every nook and cranny here, to create an inspiring layered effect.

Paired with: The Marianna Floral Print Cushion

Add a touch of handcrafted charm with our Mariana Block Print Cushion, featuring a delicate trailing leaf design inspired by Birdie’s travels in Cuba. Hand block printed on a soft cotton-linen blend, the subtle green and blue tones gently sway across an off-white base, and are finished with smart contrast piping for a refined touch. Available in two soft colourways, try pairing with the Teja Scalloped Block Printed Cushion or Remolino Embroidered Velvet Cushion for a considered, textured look.

Stowe Gardens, Buckinghamshire

Possibly the finest example of the English landscape garden, we admire Stowe for its sweeping vistas of temples, monuments and follies perfectly framed by wonderful trees. Created in the eighteenth century by the most renowned garden designers of the day – Charles Bridgeman, William Kent, and later Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown – it perfectly demonstrates the shift away from formal, rigid planting schemes to freer, open spaces. Lose yourself in the Elysian Fields, where you can stumble across a charming shell-lined grotto (surely every garden should have one) and the striking Temple of British Worthies. Save your selfie for the iconic Palladian Bridge.

Designed in Norfolk and hand-embroidered by artisans near Jaipur, each throw features intricate embroidery on a soft cotton base, finished with a classic blanket stitch. Available in Pink, Blue, or Green, its generous size makes it the perfect lightweight throw for either the end of a bed or a sofa and armchair. Pair with our Mariana Floral Print Cushion and an Aravali Bedspread for a layered bedroom.

Great Dixter, East Sussex

Horticulturalists from around the world flock to the garden of the late, great Christopher Lloyd.

A highly influential gardener and writer, Lloyd wrote twenty-five books inspired by his lifelong work here. His experimental style of bold colour combinations and innovative, profuse planting is epitomised in the fabulous long border that sits alongside the evocative 15th century house restored by Sir Edwin Lutyens. Meander through the quirky topiary to investigate the exotic garden and be inspired by the vibrant container displays. And if you need some motivation for your own garden, may we recommend Lloyd’s classic work, The Well-Tempered Garden.
