How do I choose a colour palette?
If presented with a clean slate, focus on what might be a key element in your room. For instance, a piece of art or a rug. If these haven’t been chosen, then you might have a favourite cushion you want to incorporate or a fabric to use for curtains. From this, pick two colours and weave these into your scheme through your rug, textiles, wall colour and art. To bring the room to life, introduce an accent colour for an additional pop.
How should I layer colour in my home?
Build colour up in layers through textiles, texture, artwork and hard finishes. Use tonally different shades of your two main colours and weave these through the various elements in the room. Layer pattern on pattern but in a way that they don’t compete with one another - choose your hero fabric, a couple of smaller scale secondary designs and then again slightly smaller geometric or ditsy prints to accompany. Echo the tones in artwork, rugs, lamps and lampshade for a well balanced, harmonious effect.
What are some of your favourite colour combinations?
I love using blue and green together - they balance well and are a fun combination. Equally, a completely tonal room will create a big impact - particularly indigo and white or green and white. Remember that these still need an accent colour to create depth and visual interest!
How and where should I incorporate an accent colour?
Use an accent colour on a single cushion, a piece of art or in your decorative accessories. Use this colour a handful of times to create a visual thread that doesn’t feel overbearing.
How should I carry colour through my home so each room flows seamlessly to the next without it looking too uniform?
Getting the colour right in a hallway is key - it needs to blend with the varying colours you are using in different rooms. If you are opting for mainly a green or blue palette in the rooms off your hallway, then choose a colour for the hall with these underlying tones, whether it be a strong or light colour. If it uses a proportion of the same pigments, then the colours will blend harmoniously. You want to avoid using colours that will jar with one another and which hinder that seamless movement between rooms.
How can I avoid 'seasonal' colours?
Choose colours you love and you won’t go wrong. Avoid being led by fashion trends and don't overcomplicate things! A home filled with colours and pieces which have an emotional pull always make for the best interiors.
